Mrs. Laura Russell Dies at Age 87
Mrs. Laura A. Russelll, 87, widow of George S. Russell, whose death occurred in 1925, died today at 4:30 a.m., in St. Anthony’s Infirmary, where she was a patient for eight months. Mrs. Russell was moved to the infirmary following a fall in which she broke her wrist.
She is survived by two sons, Frank and Leland Russell of Alton, and a grandson, Nelson Russell of Winnetka, Ill. She also leaves a nephew, George Jones, and two nieces, the Misses Nellie I. and Lucy Jones.
Mrs. Russell, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Williamson Jones of Alton, was born in Alton. With the exception of two years, when she resided in St. Louis, Mrs. Russell, who lived at 1224 State street, spent her life in the 1200 and 1300 blocks on State street.
She taught in Irving School, preceding her sister, Miss Lucy Belle Jones, who died Oct 16, 1942.
Mrs. Russell was a descendant of William Clark, American explorer, and of the McMahon family, a descendant of the only survivor of an Indian massacre at Waterloo. Her grandmother was the only person to escape alive when Indians attacked the settlement.
She was the eldest member of the First Methodist Church, and a member of the Queen Esther Class and Circle No. 1 of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, church organizations.
Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. O.F. Whitlock, pastor of the First Methodist Church, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leland S. Russell, 923 Logan street, at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the family lot in City Cemetery.
Friends may view the body at the Russell residence after 1 p.m. Saturday.
